The United States House of Representatives on Tuesday passed a resolution calling for an end to the war with Iran under President Donald Trump. This vote, viewed as a strong political critique of the government's management of the war, was passed just weeks before the midterm elections.
Voting and Changes in Republican Support
This is the third time that the House of Representatives, which is primarily controlled by Democrats but with support from some Republicans, has called on Trump to withdraw military forces from Iran. Democrats claim that this vote is their most significant effort to end the war and was passed in the lead-up to the November elections.
In this vote, seven Republicans supported the resolution, an increase from the four Republican votes in the previous two resolutions. The three new Republicans included Mariannette Miller-Meeks and Zach Nunn from Iowa and Nancy Mace from South Carolina.
Criticism and Pressure on Republicans
Republicans who previously voted in support of this resolution included Thomas Massie from Kentucky, Tom Barrett from Michigan, Warren Davidson from Ohio, and Brian Fitzpatrick from Pennsylvania. Zach Nunn stated in a post on social media platform X after the vote: "I will not support another endless war. We can defend Americans, pressure Iran, and still achieve peace."
The Republican leadership in the House does not officially pressure its members on such resolutions. However, Trump has publicly attacked Republicans who voted against this resolution, viewing it as a test of their support for him.
One of Congress's latest attempts to limit Trump's military powers in Iran ended dramatically. While several Republicans in the U.S. Senate voted in favor of this resolution, pressure from the White House caused one Republican senator to change their vote. It is still unclear whether the U.S. Senate can vote on this resolution again, but Democrats plan to make another attempt this week.
Outside of Congress, voters are increasingly skeptical of hostile actions in Iran. According to a summer poll, 67 percent of people believe that Trump's decisions regarding military action in Iran have been detrimental to the United States. Fuel prices are also rising again, with diesel prices reaching over $6 per gallon.
Democrats in 2026 have sought to force Republicans to take a stance on the government's hostile actions against Iran, which has effectively turned into a one-party war. Now even Trump's own party does not support further funding for this war, and the Pentagon's multi-billion dollar request will likely remain on hold until after the midterm elections.
