Mamdani stated at a press conference that the delay in his security clearance has "limited his ability to receive classified information related to terrorism or other threats against New York." With a population of nearly 8.5 million, New York is in dire need of security information.

Mamdani's Comments on the Clearance Process
However, Mamdani said that this delay is "normal timing" for clearance approval and added, "My process for obtaining federal security clearance is underway." He also noted that several senior government officials currently have security clearance and that the New York Police Department (NYPD) regularly updates him on intelligence investigations that do not involve federal classified information.
History of Security Clearance Issues in New York City Hall
Mamdani is not the first Mayor of New York to face issues with security clearance from the federal government. Former Mayor Bill de Blasio also faced high clearance issues during his tenure starting in 2014, and reports suggest he never applied for this clearance early in his first term. According to sources, his federal clearance took over a year.
Eric Adams, the former Mayor of New York, also had his security clearance revoked after facing a federal indictment as the first sitting mayor in 2024.
Experts have pointed out that the review process for federal security clearance, conducted by the FBI, can take up to a year for individuals in their first term of public office, like Mamdani.
The news of Mamdani's lack of national security clearance comes as the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly is taking place in New York, with many foreign dignitaries visiting the city. Experts believe that Mamdani's inability to receive classified information from the federal government "could tie the mayor's hands and potentially delay official responses in an emergency situation."
