The European Union on Monday extended its discussions on Russia sanctions for another week. This decision was made due to the lack of agreement among member states regarding the removal of Alisher Usmanov, a Russian billionaire, from the sanctions list.

Ambassadors of EU member states in Brussels agreed to extend the validity of the Russia sanctions list, which includes Alisher Usmanov, for one more week. This decision was made as the sanctions list was set to expire at midnight on Tuesday. Thus, member countries will have another opportunity to review and discuss Usmanov's status. The next meeting to discuss this matter will be held on September 22.

The current EU sanctions list includes nearly 3,000 individuals and entities and requires unanimous approval from all 27 member countries every six months. While Slovakia and France have expressed willingness to remove Usmanov's name from the sanctions list, 25 other countries have not supported this action.

An EU diplomat stated, "This means we did not reach an agreement for one week." A French diplomatic source also referred to national security issues, saying, "We [France] have a specific national security concern and want to respond positively to our international partners, who are approaching us regarding Mr. Usmanov."
The sanctions imposed on Usmanov, which were enacted in 2022 due to his close ties with Vladimir Putin, the President of Russia, include a visa ban and the freezing of his assets. Given the situation created by the Ukraine war since 2022, this extension of negotiations could be a sign of the political and economic complexities in the EU's relations with Russia.
