The German government takes new steps to combat espionage and sabotage

The German government announced its new plans to counter espionage and sabotage threats following a National Security Council meeting. These measures come in response to recent attacks from Russia.

The German government has announced new measures to combat espionage and sabotage efforts. This decision was made after the National Security Council meeting held on Monday. The spokesperson for the German government, Stefan Korneus, stated that the council examined the espionage threats that Germany is facing.

Review of Espionage Threats

Stefan Korneus said that the National Security Council reviewed Germany's situation following an attack that occurred last month at Leipzig Airport. This attack is recognized as being orchestrated by Russian intelligence. Korneus stated in a post-meeting announcement: "The council obtained a comprehensive picture of the current situation and it is assumed that Germany will continue to be a target of espionage attacks from Russia."

New Measures to Combat Espionage

During this meeting, the National Security Council discussed how the federal government should respond to future attacks and reviewed measures taken under the operational defense program against espionage threats. Korneus added that "the council decided to take new steps in combating espionage and sabotage as well as protecting critical infrastructure."

This meeting followed weeks of intensive coordination among the relevant ministries represented in the National Security Council. The council also agreed on actions to reduce Germany's unilateral dependence on foreign suppliers in key economic and security areas.

Reducing Dependence on Foreign Suppliers

In this context, the council decided to quickly revise the laws regarding investment reviews and to take measures to ensure a diverse and resilient supply of critical raw materials. Korneus also referred to the establishment of a raw materials fund that acts as the main financing tool under the government's raw materials policy operational program.

The National Security Council also continued discussions on military and civilian defense as well as the security implications of artificial intelligence.
