Russia Sends Military Equipment to Its Bases in Syria

A convoy of Russian military ships has delivered equipment to Syrian coastal facilities. This operation follows a new agreement between Damascus and Moscow.

Russia has begun sending military equipment to its bases in Syria. Two sources familiar with the matter reported that a convoy consisting of Russian military and cargo ships delivered equipment last week to the coastal facilities in Syria under the control of the Russian army.

Details of the Equipment Delivery Operation

This operation is the first mission following a new agreement between Damascus and Moscow last month regarding the future of Russia's military presence in Syria. The agreement specifies the transfer of civilian facilities to Syrian control and the conversion of some military sites into joint training centers, indicating that Moscow continues to supply the necessary equipment for the facilities at the port of Tartus and the Hmeimim airbase.

The Importance of Tartus Port for Russia

Tartus port is of great significance as Russia's only facility in the Mediterranean for repairs and resupplying ships with fuel and equipment. In recent months, Russia has also supplied these two facilities with necessary equipment and logistics, but the recent mission marks the first instance following the announcement of the August 9 agreement. According to observed movements, a convoy consisting of four ships arrived at Tartus port on September 7.

Verified satellite images show that the Russian cargo ship "Sparta" and the Russian Navy support ship "Akademik Pashin" docked at Tartus port on September 8 at berths three and four, respectively.
