A local court in Bangladesh on Tuesday issued the death sentence for seven ousted advisors of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. These individuals have been accused of crimes against humanity during the seasonal protests of 2024.
Details of the Death Sentence
A three-member panel of the International Crimes Tribunal in Dhaka, headed by Judge Nazrul Islam Chowdhury, issued this ruling. All seven convicts are currently in hiding and living in India and the United States. Additionally, the court ruled that half of the assets belonging to Qaderi, Nasim, Arafat, and Parash will be confiscated and distributed as compensation to the families of the victims who lost their lives or were injured in the July incident during these protests.

Background and Consequences
Last November, Sheikh Hasina was also sentenced to death by the same court. She was punished for her role in the severe crackdown on protesters during the 2024 protests that led to her government's ousting. According to United Nations reports, at least 1,400 people died in these protests, and thousands more were injured. Sheikh Hasina is currently living in voluntary exile in India but has announced that she will return to Bangladesh this December.
Since the beginning of these trials, a total of 68 defendants have been convicted, and 22 have been sentenced to death. Among the defendants, 18 are still at large, and four are currently in custody.
