The CEO of the Russian state nuclear energy company, Rosatom, Alexey Likhachev, and the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Grossi, discussed the safety of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine during a meeting in Vienna.
Development of the Situation at the Zaporizhzhia Power Plant
According to Rosatom, these discussions took place on the sidelines of the IAEA's General Conference. Likhachev informed Grossi that the situation at the power plant and the nearby city of Enerhodar has severely worsened since late April. In the past four and a half months, over 750 attacks using Ukrainian drones and artillery have been carried out in the area, resulting in the deaths of 20 people, including nine employees of the Zaporizhzhia power plant, and injuring more than 100 others.

Attacks on Fuel Supply for the Power Plant
The two officials also paid special attention to recent attacks on fuel-carrying vehicles for the power plant. Likhachev emphasized that these vehicles are transporting diesel, which is urgently necessary to ensure the nuclear safety of the plant. Grossi, for his part, stated that the IAEA is ready to explore ways to assist in securing similar fuel supplies.
Grossi also stressed that he is committed to cooperating with Russia regarding the safety of the Zaporizhzhia power plant and expressed his readiness to continue discussions on this matter.
The dialogue between Alexey Likhachev and Rafael Grossi reflects serious concerns about the safety situation at the Zaporizhzhia power plant and its implications for global nuclear security. This power plant, as one of the largest nuclear facilities in Europe, currently faces serious risks that necessitate increased international oversight and support.
