The Presidency of Russia announced that approximately 200 tons of diesel fuel have leaked into Katanga Bay in the Arctic of the country. This incident occurred after a storage tank in the remote town of Sindasko was damaged due to a storm. The fuel in this tank was used to power the town's diesel power plant.
Details of the Incident and Fuel Leak Estimate
Initial reports estimated the amount of leaked fuel to be around 170 tons, but officials later revised this estimate to about 200 tons. Emergency services also stated that the volume of the leak is approximately equal to 200 cubic meters, although the exact amount is still being determined.

However, the fuel leak has not affected the electricity supply in Sindasko, as the town has fuel storage tanks that are sufficient for about 10 days. Additionally, extra fuel from Katanga is being fully dispatched.
Environmental Consequences and Next Steps
Alexey Chelnov, the mayor of Taymyr, stated that no signs of environmental damage have been observed so far. He also noted that specialists from regulatory and expert agencies have been sent to the area to take samples, and a more accurate assessment will be conducted after laboratory tests.
Meanwhile, a state of emergency has been declared in the Taymyr Dolgano-Nenets region. Local authorities have also opened a criminal case due to violations of environmental protection laws.
