The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps of Iran shot down an American MQ-9 drone over Qeshm Island

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps of Iran announced that it shot down an American MQ-9 drone over Qeshm Island at 2:29 AM local time.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced on Wednesday that it shot down an American MQ-9 drone in the early hours of yesterday morning over Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz.

Details of the Drone's Downing

According to the IRGC's statement, Iran's air defense systems identified the drone at 2:29 AM local time (23:00 GMT) and successfully shot it down. This is not the first time Iran has responded to aerial threats in such a manner, and this MQ-9 drone is the fifty-second of its kind to be shot down by Iran.

Background of Military Tensions

The IRGC also announced on Tuesday that it had shot down three MQ-1 drones in the Strait of Hormuz and surrounding areas. These events occur amid heightened military tensions between Iran and Western countries, particularly the United States and Israel. On February 28, extensive attacks were carried out by the United States and Israel against military and governmental facilities in Iran, including government buildings, military sites, and missile and air defense infrastructures.

Iran has responded to these attacks with missile and drone strikes against Israel and U.S. military bases in the region. Following these developments, the conflict in the region has significantly escalated, and diplomatic efforts to end these hostilities are underway.
