Nottingham City in England has introduced face covering restrictions starting Tuesday to combat crimes, intimidation, and anti-social behavior. The city has become one of the first in the UK to introduce such restrictions.

Nottinghamshire Police stated in a statement that these restrictions give police officers and city council officials the authority to ask individuals to remove their face coverings if their identity is concealed while committing a crime or engaging in anti-social behavior.

Under these measures, the police can take actions including issuing on-the-spot fines of £70 (equivalent to $94), confiscating face coverings, and referring offenders to an instant justice program. Additionally, individuals who repeatedly commit this offense may be banned from entering the city center for an indefinite period.

This action comes after identifying over 180 incidents in downtown Nottingham involving face coverings or balaclavas from June 2025 to June 2026. The police emphasized that these restrictions do not constitute a blanket ban on face coverings and will only be enforced in cases where officers believe that the use of face coverings is related to a crime, anti-social behavior, or intimidating behavior due to specific circumstances.
