Development of Regional Cooperation
In this conversation, Nabih Berri and Abbas Araghchi also reviewed the current developments in Lebanon and the region and efforts to support regional security and stability. The two officials also discussed developments in the Persian Gulf and efforts to strengthen cooperation between Iran and Arab and Muslim countries, especially the Gulf Cooperation Council countries.
Nabih Berri also appreciated Iran's support for Lebanon and stated that Tehran continues to consider the end of Israeli attacks on Lebanon as a top priority under its cooperation agreement with the United States.
As of October 2023, Lebanon has faced two deadly attacks that have resulted in widespread destruction, serious damage to infrastructure and homes, and exacerbated the country's economic losses. On June 26, Lebanon and Israel signed a framework agreement under U.S. auspices in Washington, which plans for the gradual withdrawal of Israel from Lebanese territories and the deployment of the Lebanese army in areas vacated by Israeli forces.
Despite this agreement, Israel continues its attacks on southern Lebanon and still occupies areas in this region, some of which have been under occupation for decades and others have been seized during recent wars and military operations.
