Germany on Wednesday welcomed the request of Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, for establishing a close partnership with Canada, but stated that the proposed label 'partner member' should be reviewed.
Germany's Support for Closer Relations with Canada
German Chancellor spokesperson, Friedrich Merz, Stephen Cornelius, told reporters that Berlin supports deepening relations with Ottawa and is ready to explore new partnership models. He stated that the terminology related to this proposal needs to be reconsidered.

Stephen Cornelius said, “Canada is a closer partner for Europe, which is why we are ready to discuss new partnership models that reflect the special importance of this relationship. However, the related terminology, namely the label, needs to be reviewed.”
Call for Closer Partnership
Meanwhile, Ursula von der Leyen announced in her speech at the European Parliament that the European Union should focus on developing new and closer partnerships to respond to increasing geopolitical and economic pressures. She stated that relations with Canada should be elevated to the “highest possible level.”
Mark Carney, Prime Minister of Canada, was also present at this speech. Von der Leyen directly told him: “I want to work with you to open the door for Canada as the first partner member of the European Union.”
She continued: “We have one ocean, a set of values, and a shared vision of the world. And now we will build our common future.”
