Japan's Prime Minister, Sanae Takaichi, met on Monday in Tokyo with Fatih Birol, the Executive Director of the International Energy Agency (IEA). This meeting was held to discuss energy security and Japan's efforts to enhance international cooperation in this area.
Advancing the POWERR GX Initiative
Takaichi stated during this meeting that her country hopes to promote its efforts globally under the POWERR GX initiative, thereby contributing to strengthening the resilience of the global energy supply and demand structure. The Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced in a statement that POWERR GX aims to enhance the resilience of the energy supply and demand structure in Japan and also focuses on the stability of fossil fuel supply and accelerating green transformations (GX).

The Prime Minister of Japan also emphasized the need to advance three main pillars to ensure global energy security. These pillars include ensuring free and transparent energy trade, enhancing international coordination in oil storage, and increasing coordination between energy-producing and consuming countries.
Close Cooperation for Global Energy Security
Fatih Birol praised Japan's energy policies, including POWERR Asia and POWERR GX, during this meeting and stated that the International Energy Agency will closely cooperate with Tokyo to ensure global energy security and the stability of energy markets.
The two sides also exchanged views on diversifying energy supply sources and strengthening the resilience of critical mineral supply chains, emphasizing close cooperation between Japan and the International Energy Agency in the challenging conditions of the global energy market.
Additionally, Birol met with Toshimitsu Motegi, Japan's Minister of Foreign Affairs. They exchanged views on enhancing the presence of Japanese staff in the International Energy Agency and increasing the resilience of critical mineral supply chains, emphasizing that they will continue their cooperation.
