David Petraeus, the former head of the CIA, was at the Yagodin train station in Ukraine when a Russian drone attacked a passenger train. This attack took place on Sunday, shortly after a diplomatic train carrying Boris Johnson, the former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, and other foreign officials passed through the station.
Details of the attack and reactions
Ukrainian officials described this attack as a sign of the growing threat that Vladimir Putin, the President of Russia, poses to Europe. According to the Ukrainian railway company, this attack may have been deliberately aimed at the diplomatic train. At the time of the attack, the diplomatic train, which included Johnson and European security officials, had reached Poland and had passed through the Yagodin station.

Petraeus, who was traveling on another train, remained at the same station. After the attack, Ukrainian officials began to investigate further details and stated that this attack was likely targeted. On the same day, a gas station in the same city was also attacked.
Consequences of Russian attacks near the Polish border
Andriy Sybiha, the Ukrainian Foreign Minister, reacted to these attacks by saying, "This Putin terror is directly knocking on the doors of the European Union and NATO." Additionally, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced that its forces continue to target railway infrastructure in western Ukraine that is used for transporting military cargo from European countries.
Boris Johnson, the former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, who remains an active supporter of Ukraine, condemned the attack and said he does not know "what logic prevented Putin from blowing up a Ukrainian locomotive." He added, "These are the kinds of random and senseless attacks that Ukrainians face every day, even on civilian railway lines."
Carl Bildt, the former Prime Minister of Sweden, was also near the Polish border at the time of the attack and shared a video on social media platform X showing a drone approaching the train while passengers were fleeing.
Russian attacks near the Polish border have increased in recent weeks, especially in the Yagodin area, which is a main route for military and humanitarian aid from the West to Ukraine. Radoslaw Sikorski, the Polish Foreign Minister, warned in Kyiv about the consequences of these attacks, stating, "This is an escalation of the situation and a significant challenge for Ukraine as well as for the future of potential victims of the Russian invasion."
British Defense Minister, Ben Wallace, also stated that Russia's attacks on civilian infrastructure near Poland clearly demonstrate the broader security threat posed by Russia. He emphasized that the UK will continue to work with its allies to strengthen European security.
This incident occurs less than a week after a Russian drone entered the airspace of Moldova while Volodymyr Zelensky, the President of Ukraine, was preparing to fly from Chișinău airport. Moldova is not a NATO member but has close cooperation with the alliance.
