Saudi Arabia, in an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council, called for a clear and decisive stance against Houthi attacks on the country. In this session, Saudi Arabia's permanent representative to the UN, Abdulaziz Alwasil, emphasized the need for international accountability regarding these threats and stated that this escalation of tensions, particularly regarding the threat to international maritime security in the Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, is unacceptable.
Increase in Attacks and Harm to Civilians
Alwasil firmly condemned the terrorist and criminal attacks targeting civilian and economic facilities in the regions of Abha, Khamis Mushait, Jazan, and Najran. These attacks have resulted in the injury of 73 civilians, including women and children.
He warned that this escalation not only threatens the security of Saudi Arabia and its national assets but will also affect maritime routes and international trade. Alwasil urged the Security Council to fulfill its responsibility in maintaining international peace and security and to take a decisive stance against Houthi attacks.
Saudi Arabia's Right to Self-Defense and Support for Yemen
The Saudi representative emphasized the country's legitimate right to defend itself and protect its security, sovereignty, and national assets, stating that this right is based on the UN Charter and international law. He also stressed Saudi Arabia's support for the unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of Yemen and reaffirmed the country's commitment to achieving a comprehensive and sustainable political solution led by Yemenis that would ensure security and stability in the region.
